BORDA GARDEN

Borda Garden
Jardín Borda

Tues-Sun 10am-5:30pm
Location: Hidalgo and Morelos, Centro Histórico
Fee required

Diagonally opposite the cathedral are the gardens of José de la Borda, once a Taxco “silver king’s” vacation home. Built in the late 1700s it was transformed into a botanical garden upon Borda’s death in 1778. In 1865 Maximilian and Empress Carlota took it over as their private summer home, offering concerts in the gardens to nobility and other distinguished guests from around the world.
The gardens, pools and fountains are now restored and are open to the public. In buildings throughout the park you’ll find art exhibits with paintings depicting the history of the gardens, plus Maximilian’s life including his lover “La India Bonita”. Each weekend arts and craft vendors sell a variety of items from booths they’ve set up in the park. Other cultural events including open-air concerts are held here. There is a café for refreshments and light meals and a small shop with Mexican artensanias.
